One of the most innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music, The Manhattan Transfer celebrates its 40th anniversary with worldwide sales in the millions, Grammy Awards by the dozen and as veterans of sold-out international tours.
The Manhattan Transfer’s release of its self-titled debut in 1975 marked the beginning of a constant stream of hit songs that would find an enthusiastic audience worldwide. Its first, the remake of the Friendly Brothers gospel classic, Operator, was followed in 1979 by the smash Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone — an update of the theme to Rod Serling’s classic television show — and a vocal remake of the Weather Report classic Birdland, which would become the group’s anthem and earn its first two Grammy Awards. But that was only the beginning. In 1981, The Manhattan Transfer became the first group ever to win Grammys in both pop and jazz categories in the same year, and, in 1985, it received a record-breaking 12 Grammy nominations for the landmark album Vocalese. The music and the accolades have never stopped coming.
The Manhattan Transfer’s latest album, The Chick Corea Songbook, brings those infectious harmonies and hip, one-of-a-kind style to the work of this jazz fusion master. “(The) Manhattan Transfer is back, and in top-notch form with a marvelous blend of melody and song.” (All About Jazz Magazine)
